religious limitations of food choices

Roles on food religion
1. to communicate with God (e.g., through saying thanks or asking blessing);
2. to demonstrate faith through acceptance of divine directives concerning diet;
3. to develop discipline through fasting.
Dietary restrictioncs include
a) what foods may and may not be eaten;
b) what to eat on certain days of the year;
c) time of day to eat;
d) how to prepare food;
e) when and how long to fas
while doing my last post about cusines in daawned on me that religion palys a big part in peoples dietary conssumption. This lit a fire in me and made me want to make a post about the differences through out religions. I decided to find the different limitations on what can and cant be eaten becasue of a persons religion. HEre are a few that i have found

In judaism
Only animals with cloven hooves and which chew the cud may be eaten (e.g., cattle, sheep, goats, deer; pigs are expressly forbidden). Only those fish which have scales and fins may be eaten. Poultry may be eaten. Carnivorous animals may not be eaten. Only meat from animals which have been slaughtered by the prescribed method may be eaten; a rabbi must supervise the slaughter of all food animals.
Meat and dairy foods may not be eaten in the same meal.
Blood may not be consumed. The sciatic nerve may not be eaten. Internal fat may not be eaten.
All foods must be without blemish.

In islam
Eating is considered a matter of worship. One is to eat for survival and good health; self-indulgence is not permitted. Food is to be shared. Food is not be thrown away or wasted.
Dietary prohibitions: very similar to Jewish law: prohibition of pork, carnivorous animals, blood. However, all foods not specifically prohibited may be eaten. Specific ritual for slaughter of animals.
Alcoholic beverages are forbidden by the Qur'an, as are other intoxicants. Use of stimulants

In hinduism
Most devout Hindus are vegetarian; the soul of an ancestor may be in an animal. Some Hindus do not eat eggs. Vegetarianism became established in Hinduism because of Buddhist emphasis on respect for life
The cow is sacred, and beef is forbidden; some people will eat pork and chicken. Milk and ghee (clarified butter) are sacred because they are products of the sacred cow; a Brahmin may accept milk or foods cooked in ghee from even a Sudra.
Coconut is also sacred (the three 'eyes' of the coconut represent the three eyes of.
Other forbidden foods: domestic fowl, salted pork, onions, garlic, turnips, and mushrooms. Some avoid red foods (tomatoes) because of association with blood.

In buddhism

Buddhists vow to abstain from killing or otherwise injuring living creatures; however, some Buddhists do eat meat, and many eat fish.
Fasting and feasting: Buddhist monks may fast twice a month (new moon and full moon). Most monks do not eat after noon. Buddhist festivals vary with region.

Cuisines

Cuisines primarily change throughout diffferent cultures.A cuisine is usually made using ingredients in the household or in the neighborhood that are easily acccesible. Traditional cusines are usually a combination of ingredients in the everycay household with ingredients from different backgroundsFor example a chinese cuisine will use the everyday rice with traditional chinese spices. Also certain cuisines depending on the ethnical background may vary from household to household depending on the houses religious aspects.For example, indian cuisines are for the most part vegetarian becasue hinduism does not allow the consumption of meat.

indian food

The foods of India are known for their sophisticated use of many spices and vegetables grown across India and also for the widespread practice of vegetarianism across its society. It is Considered by some to be one of the world's most diverse food types, each family of this cuisine is characterized by a wide assortment of dishes and cooking techniques.consequently,Indian cuisine varies from region to region.As a land that has experienced extensive immigration and intermingling through many millennia, India's cuisine has benefited from numerous food influences. The diverse climate in the region,from deep tropical to alpine, has also helped heighten the set of ingredients available to the many schools of cookery in India.
To most people indian food may seem bland or just to spicy in the sense that it has so many herbs but i happen to think that its very delicious and tasty and although it is kind of hard to come by in south florida, on the off chance that i get to have indian food i like to indulge.

mexican foods(history)

conquistadores arrived in Aztec,the people's diet consisted mostly of corn-based food with chilies and herbs, usually with beans and tomatoes. The conquistadores combined rice, beef, pork, chicken, wine, and garlic with the native foods of Mexico, including chocolate, maize, tomato, avocado, guava, papaya, pineapple,fish and turkey.Their happens to be a big difference between truly authentic Mexican food, and "Tex Mex" (Texan-Mexican) cuisine. Mexican cuisine combines with the cuisine of the southwest United States to form Cal-Mex and Tex-Mex cuisine.
While Mexican Restaurants can be found in almost any town throughout the United States, and in many cities around the world, restaurants outside the American Southwest often have nontraditional ingredients. Although we as americans enjoy the food just as mch if not more;Mexican foods such as Quesadillas have been compomised woth american style products which is ntot the way that they were intended to be made.Such as grated American-style cheese, "nacho" cheese or tomato-based sauce substitutes for Mexican chile-based sauces.

soul food

Soul food is mostly known to be the "black people" food. The foods that people usually associate as soul food are fried chicken, mac and cheese, mashed paotatoes, and cornbread. The soul food become popular when the word soul became used in connection with most things African American. The origins of soul food, however, are much older and can be traced back to Africa. Around the time of early African exploration, European explorers brought their own food supplies and introduced them into the African food. Foods such as turnips from Morocco and cabbage from Spain would play an important part in the history of African American cuisine.

spanish food history

Spanish cooking has popular roots. It is the people’s cuisine. Most of it is down-to-earth, uncomplicated food, based on the ingredients available locally or the crops grown.This is one of the reasons why cooking differs so much from region to region.
Many dishes are prepared today using the same cooking methods and ingredients as they were two or three hundred years ago. Other dishes sprung up from European and American influences and were adapted to the Spanish taste. One thing is for sure, food in Spain is fresh, abundant and full of taste and the Spanish love their food dearly.Their food consists pf olive oil, garlic, seafood, and various dairy products.Their especially known for theri rices and fragrant foods.
